Bangkok MRT (Subway) Overview

Apart from the BTS Skytrain, the MRT or the Bangkok Subway is one of the most convenient ways to travel in Bangkok. Unlike the BTS, the MRT has got only one line but these two highly modern means of transportation intersect at the Asok BTS Station.

The frequency of the MRT in Bangkok is okay, with 5 minutes between trains during the morning and evening peak hours and 10 minutes between trains during off-peak hours. The total fleet is just 19 trains and it connects Hua Lamphong to Bang Sue.

There are 18 stations on the current MRT Blue Line, each connected by a myriad of busses of every kind and colour. But the future for the MRT in Bangkok is bright. There are several expansion plans some of which are under construction while others are just plans.

The MRT Purple line, which is scheduled for opening next month in April 2017, will connect Tao Pun to Khlong Bang Phai while more extensions are planned for the future.

We highly recommend using the Subway and the BTS when you travel in Bangkok. Regardless of whether you are a tourist, an expat, or a local, by using these fast trains you’ll be able not only to escape the difficult Bangkok traffic but you’ll also help reduce pollution. That is both noise and air pollution!

There are many attractions you can visit and things you can see at all these stations. For example, Hustlers Bangkok is located at station number 7, MRT Sukhumvit. From here, there’s just a 5-minute walk to the best pool hall in Bangkok.
