Did you know some of us could be heliophobic? Heliophobia is the fear of sun and sunlight. After a day out in the streets of Bangkok on a hot afternoon, one is sure to acknowledge this phobia and be traumatized by your sunburn. The truth of the matter is that you may never be able to truly escape the extreme heat of summer in Bangkok but you can always find ways to stay cool!
Tip #1: Remain covered
Constant exposure to sun not only has harmful effects but also causes skin pigmentation. But does that mean you have to wear long sleeves, stay covered and be uncomfortably sweaty? Not really. You can always pick fabrics like cotton and linen that allow more airflow. Wear a floppy hat and a pair of shades to avoid direct UV rays from bothering your head and eyes. Drape yourself with a cotton summer scarf if you are stepping outdoors for a considerable amount of time. Choose footwear that is covered but breathable without making your feet sweaty.
Tip #2: Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated in the streets of Bangkok is pivotal to your wellbeing during summer. You may be walking down Sukhumvit and the possibility of getting drenched in your own sweat is highly probable. But thanks to the abundance of 7-Eleven shops and road side drink stalls spread throughout the city, you can quickly quench your thirst. Some drinks like coconut water, fruit drinks like orange, lemon and seasonal fruits, iced- coffee and tea are some common drinks that are popular with the locals and tourists. Temperatures are likely to soar, so if you are commuting, make sure you have a bottle of water on you at all times.
Tip #3: Escape to a mall
Why do you think Bangkok has so many malls? It is unquestionably to offer refuge from the blistering heat. Shopping and eating would of course be the obvious reason to go to a mall, but even if you have no such agenda, you can always still hangout in mall to enjoy the air-conditioning. With malls mushrooming everywhere, Bangkokians have a variety of choices of malls to suite their budget and lifestyle. A word of caution: you may land up freezing in some of these malls in Bangkok because many malls believe in blasting their air-conditioners full tilt.
Tip #4: Find cool ambience
Overcrowded restaurants during summer are the worst place to cool down from the sweltering heat. Choosing a restaurant or bar that offers cool and relaxed ambience should be your top priority. Hustlers Bangkok could be a perfect haven to beat the heat in Bangkok!
