For many years, Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Soi 33 was a hot spot for anyone who wanted to party the night away.

Here are 10 things you should know about Sukhumvit Soi 33’s past and present.

1. Over the years, the business has been going up and down, but has never managed to return to the heights of the 2000s.

2. Sukhumvit Soi 33 was known especially for its hostess bars and the area become very lively in the evening. Business thrived.

3. Foreigners with money to spare would come to these bars to drink, chat with the girls, and play any bar games available.

4. In the early times, only about half the hostess girls would go with the customers.

5. The other half of the girls were mostly students from Ramkhamhaeng University who were working part time in hostess bars.

6. By 6 o’clock in the evening, the bars were starting to get full and they stayed that way until late at night.

7. Unlike now, there were more customers during week days while at the weekend the usual clientele would venture to other parts of Bangkok.

8. There’s a very large community of Japanese expats that frequent the road for its many Japanese restaurants.

9. Today, Sukhumvit Soi 33 has long passed its glory days but a few new high-end bars and clubs promise to re-start its atmosphere.

10. One of the more recent openings is Check Inn 99, a bar and restaurant that is doing a great job at lining up entertaining live music, jazz sessions, and even dance parties.
